Camping Food

I am getting really excited about camping this weekend, friends. And a big part of the reason I’m excited is camping food – from the tinfoil wrapped batch of biscuits that we set to warm over the fire in the mornings, to the grilled hot dogs and hamburgers, to the jacket potatoes roasted in the embers, everything is hearty and a little smoky and always way too hot to eat.

I’m excited too because of the camping community that Husband’s family has – many of the people who came to our wedding will be hanging out with us all weekend. Usually, a circle of camping chairs coalesces somewhere near where their group is camping and there’s always someone to play cards with, go on a hike with, or float a tube down the river with.

I love that everyone brings a few things – a meal or a pile of bottled water or a stack of snacks. It’s rarely health food, but it’s always communal – pretty much everyone contributes in to the whole group’s meals and whoever is around at mealtimes scrapes together something out of the communal groceries. It’s how I feel meals make the most sense, and feel the most special.

What’s your favorite camp meal? Soon, I think I’ll post about Husband’s favorite, what he calls “hobo dinners,” but I’d love to hear what you tend to nosh on when out in the great outdoors. πŸ™‚

My brother claims Oreos are the perfect camping food – he used to let my kids eat as many as they wanted. “No rules!” was the rule. This probably stems from the fact that PopTarts featured prominently in our childhood camping trips.
I fondly remember Campfire Stew from my Girl Scout days and have a Beef and Vegetable Soup recipe that closely resembles it, at least to my mind.

    Enjoy your trip!

Bacon butties, A homemade roll cut in half and filled with crispy fried pacon topped with sweet Scandinavian mustard and pickled sliced ghurkins. You need a frying pan of course, but we always bring one πŸ˜‰

Whenever my family went camping, our first night’s meal was always chili and hotdogs. Something quick and easy to cook once we had the tents set up.

  8. You should take a long a few steaks – just throw them on the coals for a couple of minutes, turn them over for a couple more and they will taste amazing.

  9. Damper bread. Flour mixed with water wrapped round a stick. For extra yumminess take a little honey to dip them in.

  10. Love your writing! I’m making glamping food and usually involves some pie crust and some seasonal stone fruit we pick up at a roadside market on the way to the campsite. Good stuff.

We just got back from our first camping trip of of the year! I tend to camp solo with my two kids (7 & 4) so I keep it super simple. I love my pie iron! This time we tried pizza pockets in it and it was great!! We love beans and hot dogs–my son is now in charge of roasting all the dogs. He’s so proud! I’ve got to have bacon sammies and I love to make banana boats in the fire for desert. Sometimes I’ll do a s’mores bar if we have friends camping with us.

Those foods do sound so yummy! I haven’t been camping in forever and reading this post made me miss it. We do have a bunch of Cabella’s giftcards from Christmas so perhaps time to invest in a tent?! Do you have Cabella’s near you? Thanks for sharing πŸ™‚ Looked like great family time.
