I took a break from my latest blanket project to try out an idea that my grandmother-in-law, J, suggested. She was in a soaps-and-lotions-and-other-smelly-stuff store, and saw some crocheted cotton face scrubbies. They were soft, she said, and replaced the disposable cotton that people use to wash their faces so often. It saved waste, they were beautiful, and they looked like they would work up quickly!
I was right: I found a beautiful pattern at The Stitchin’ Mommy, and some lightweight wool (had no cotton handy, but I will order some!), and in 30 minutes, I had this lovely little circle! I had to learn the puff stitch for the first time, but even Husband commented that it looks even, professional, and quite functional. Success!
The ladies on my Christmas list are definitely getting some of these, especially since I can make one faster than I can watch most tv show episodes! I’m on a quest to make homemade gifts that my friends and family will actually use, rather than finding precious and then getting rid of them, and this seems like a wonderful first find!

If you’re handy with a crochet hook (I can just about manage one, I’m more of a knitter myself, but adaptable!), try your hand at these eco-friendly, washable and re-useable face scrubbies. Good for using leftover bits of wool/cotton yarn.

Are there any special care / cleaning instructions that go along with the type of wool you used?

I expect that this wool would felt over time and might not hold up in the wash as well as cotton; I ordered some cotton yarn for my next few scrubbies, but I wanted to write about the experience of making a sample one!

Love the way these look! I am having problems with circles. All directions I find have me confused. Any ideas or great places for simple instruction?

What a great idea. I could use them on my travels too. Hotels often offer a throw away cloth to take off your make-up so you don’t mess up their towels, but maybe I take these in my make-up bag.

I’ve done a lot of these with scrap yarn. They’re great for scrubbing dishes and such as well, though you might want to make them a little larger for that.

I have a similar pattern for some of these that I am using to make some little spa sets for most of the ladies on my gift list this year. I found some thicker ones (that are more three dimensional) for face scrubbers, the ones like these will be labeled makeup removers (some patterns even have a little pouch that matches so they can be packed in a suitcase easier), and I found a pattern for a hyperbolic dishcloth that will make a great washcloth. I’m with you, I love these little things because they whip up so fast and use so little yarn that they’re a great gift idea.

What an excellent idea!! I usually just use a washcloth and water to wash my face but this, with a little added loop on it so it could hang, I imagine would be just perfect to get that exfoliated feel 🙂
