Food Memory: Cafe Cortado


In Grand Rapids, Michigan, I drank a cafe cortado made with almond milk and was grateful that little bits of my Spain experience were still possible in my journey in the States. Cafe cortado is simple despite the fancy-sounding name – it’s a shot of espresso with just a little bit of foamed milk, which means its smaller than a cappuccino but less harsh than taking a shot of espresso alone. Cortados on break from teaching in Spain were a quick pick-me-up – I don’t make espresso at home but small coffees still make me smile.

    Mmmm. If I ever get to Spain, I will order this. My usual order sounds the same–a macchiato. Espresso with a bit of foamed milk. And I feel about it just the way you do!

  3. Small coffees and smiles – we had Turkish coffee recently after a celebratory meal with my younger daughter, just turned 30, my son-in-law, and their 3 week old infant. The Turkish coffee took my husband and me right back to drinking coffee in Egypt in the early 1980s, when he was an overseas volunteer. Like a time travelling experience, isn’t it, that visceral jolt of memory? 🙂

  4. This reminds me of a food memory from my first trip to France.

    I stayed with a host family, and the host mom always had the same very simple breakfast ready for us. It was a toasted baguette with butter and strawberry preserves spread on it, with hot chocolate to drink. The hot chocolate just turned out to be Yoohoo, but I didn’t care. Her desire not to send us out on a full stomach was very touching, and as much as I loved her dinners (she was a great cook), I always looked forward to breakfast. I remember doing toasted baguette in this same way when I returned to the states.

    Thanks for sharing this; it brought back a very sweet memory for me!

    Yum – that’s basically my drink all winter – I switch to iced espresso with a bit of milk in summer. But I’ve never tried it with almond milk, and I’m sure it’s good. Thanks for the follow!
