Food Memory: Food Truck Flavors

foodmemory21

Most people don’t love sitting on the curb to eat their meal out of a paper-board box, but when it’s part of a food truck rally, it becomes a much more exotic notion. While travelling, Husband and I visited a food truck rally that allowed us to see a huge variety of trucks, and what I liked best was that they tended to specialize: instead of trying to serve 50 different meals, they had 3 meals with a couple customizable parts. What food trucks lose in gas efficiency (brick and mortar don’t have to pay gas to move around!) they gain in inventory efficiency – they can pretty regularly stock up and sell down all their supplies. It also makes me feel like I’m getting their most delicious fare, because I don’t wonder if the other 49 menu items are better. Having a big squad of food trucks allows a group to buy multiple items and sample a wide variety of dishes, creating a down-home version of the high-fallutin’ “tasting menus” of fancy dining. If you want variety, these rallies are where its at!

My daughter took the kids to a food truck event. They both have bottomless stomachs and had the time of their lives sampling things.

Food trucks are pretty ubiquitous in Manhattan’s business areas but a food truck RALLY would be awesome. Just park the car and walk over to the array of food! Did they give samples so you would know what to buy?

When we were kids, we would buy food from the roadside vendors. They do not have trucks, but would be in a cart-like bicycle setting up shop. Many a time we had our stir-fried noodles for just 50 cents back in the day. Oh how our little island has changed!

  5. I thought I lived in the Food Truck capitol. Apparently I was wrong because I’ve never been to a food truck rally. Sounds good. I gotta track one down!!!

  6. We have one in Winnipeg every September. I like all the food trucks in one place, unfortunately after the first year, they just went with the trucks offering their regular menus. Limits the number a person’s stomach and wallet can manage.

  10. Sounds amazing. I have yet to try! In the Philippines we have boodle fight, so I’m ready to eat while sitting on the curb.

  13. I live in Houston and they do a large food truck rally every year in July, which if you know Houston is like the WORST month to be outside for a prolonged period of time. But there’s so many food trucks in this city I don’t think I’ll ever be able to try them all.
