What is this?

I got married in 2015. I did a lot of other things too, but one of the cooler aspects of getting married was the fact that I asked people to write a favorite recipe on the back of their RSVP cards.

I didn’t inherently want to try three different versions of chicken pot pie; I was just interested in the people I know and love, and the recipes that mattered to them. I also didn’t really think that very many people would do it, so it was sort of a one-off “cute wedding thing.”

I was wrong: of the 70-odd invites I sent, more than 30 people sent me a response with a recipe. Some of them were labeled as heirloom recipes, some were labeled as quick and easy, some of them were eventually incorporated into my wedding gifts!

There were so many stories that were related to food that I knew were just begging to be told. I also am a recovering processed-food junkie and thought it might be good to give myself a bit of a challenge to keep me away from the frozen pizzas. A storytelling and cooking challenge for 2016.

So here it is (subject to potential modification). In 2016, I will:

  • Make all 35 recipes. I want to reach out to whoever sent the recipe in some way to let them know I made it and see if they have any stories to share about it.
  • Write about the experience of making the recipes and any modifications I made, especially modifications to save packaging (a pet cause of mine) or make the meals healthier (I will be honest if healthiness sacrifices flavor).
  • Have at least 4 dinner potlucks where I get to try out some of these recipes on others, and start building my community here (most of the recipes are from friends and family who are far away).

So that is it: 35 recipes, 35ish blog entries, and 4 dinner potlucks. Can I pull it off? No idea. But you can bet that I’ll give it my best effort.

This is such a lovely idea. I just bought the most adorable little bread plates at an estate sale this weekend; had dinner parties on my mind. Always wanted to do more of them, and your take on them gives me the warm fuzzies.

    • Thanks! I am trying to sub in more whole grains and veggies for my processed favorites (I’m a cheetos-and-crystal-light girl, but I know it’s healthier to cook real food!), so I appreciate the encouragement! It’s been a great journey. 🙂

I like this idea a lot but as I am an older person and live alone I don’t try many new recipes, I think it seems silly just for one! But I love reading recipes! and maybe I will be inspired by your adventures. I don’t buy ready made “stuff”, like to know what I am using when I cook and that its as you say “real food”. Good luck in what you do with all the great recipes you must have been given.

  10. Thank you for coming on board my site. Hang in by reading some from many moons back while I get my brain in gear to post again. Not as technically savvy as I wish I were, I put words off till one of my daughters is around to help get photos in. Your recipe challenge sounds promising and I already like your style. Way to go! And good luck with that!

I have to add my 2 cents here…54 yrs ago I did pretty much the same thing…and I still have those recipe cards. Some are faded, covered in grease etc. You get the picture. Treasure them and keep a diary of the love gift from each person, they will become your treasures to pass on one day.
Thanks for choosing to follow my blog, may each encourage you as you walk this world.

Thanks for ‘stumbling’ on my YouSayWHAT.info blog — and becoming a follower. (You might want to check out my other blog: FoodTradeTrends.com.) I am trying a making-it-up-as-go-along recipe this evening — stuffing green peppers with fennel-seed-laced ground pork sausage. It’s going to have a ‘secret ingredient,’ too! (But I’ll share the recipe with you, if you’d like!)

PS — I’ve put three posts up on FoodTradeTrends.com today. ‘Likely to do at least one more before I start prepping for dinner.
That’s a heavy posting load in one day, but my wife’s been working all day, so I had the time.
